Texas Lily
Published in Paperback by Forge (August, 2000)
Author: Elizabeth Fackler
Average review score:

Chilling Tale of Revenge
A fictional account of the Lincoln County War from the perspective of the Pecos Valley, this book contains more truth than the cold hard facts, with the exception of providing a happy ending for those who deserved it. A chilling tale of revenge and lost romance, its theme is of ultimate forgiveness and peace found in the discipline of daily love. A truly moral tale.

Tx Log Buildings--excellent resource
I was a student of Dr. Jordan's at UT Austin in his Geography of Texas class. His lectures on Texas are as good, as I have found out, as his writings. Recommend to anyone interested in the rural history of Texas

Texas Lonesome (Harper Monogram)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (January, 1996)
Author: Alice Duncan

Delightful!
Emily von Plotz writes an advice to the lovelorn column in San Francisco. She chances to meet "Texas Lonesome," an unpolished but well-meaning fellow who wants to learn about proper decorum so as to meet a lady to marry and share his wealth with. Emily, of course, decides that she would be the perfect lady... but her well-meaning eccentric reletives (and their dachshunds) always seem to get in the way.

TEXAS LONESOME is absolutely delightful! I loved the dogs ;) I loved the plot twists, the ending escapades, the glimpses of San Francisco, and they way we were reminded that this was 1895--all the little improprities that a reader in 1995 wouldn't think of, like *gasp* sharing the same piece of furniture! the secondary characters were hilarious, and I'd love to see Thomas, the hero's best friend, get a book of his own. There were lots of LOL [laugh out loud] parts in this book, and lots of bits I had to read to my husband--a sure sign of either a very funny or very horrid book; this is definitely funny and not at all horrid. Thanks, Alice!

Texas Men: Big Guns, Rising Stars & Cowboys
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (November, 2000)
Authors: Martana and Larry Hagman
Average review score:

Texas Men: A Cowboys & Indians Magazine Review, January 2001
A collection of interviews and photographs of over 180 Texas men, from firemen, to billionaires, the gamut is extensive. The author, Martana, is a sixth-generation Texan, who hangs her hat in Dallas. Each interview has a "Tall Texas Tale" written by a good friend-men and women who are distinguished in their own right. Some of the tall tale writers are President George Bush (for actor Chuck Norris), and Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn (for artist Bill Worrell). Other important Texas men featured include Western wear outfitter Mike Cavender, All-American roper Roy Cooper, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, and Olympic athlete Carl Lewis. Artistic photography by Mikel Wixson captures the ranches, estates, and business empires where these men spend their time away from work. A gem of a coffee table book. -by Kelly Roberts

The Texas Military Experience: From the Texas Revolution Through World War II (Texas A & M University Military History Series, No 43)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (September, 1995)
Author: Joseph G., III Dawson
Average review score:

The mythos and history.
Texas, "born in strife and baptized in blood", has a military mystique more like a sovereign state than an ordinary American state. The iconic Alamo, the frontier and Civil War experience, Audie Murphy, the famous 36th Division; all contribute to a martial reputation which helps make Texas unique in the eyes of the world.
These and other elements of this enduring image of Texas are explored here in this highly readable collection of essays, reassessing the Texas Revolution, noting some neglected participants in Texas history, reviewing the Texas military experience in film and literature, and generally sorting out reality from the mythology. Highly recommended for the general reader, and especially for students of military history.

A Magical Book
I'm a photographer not easily impressed. This book is simply the best rendering of this breathtaking, little known part of Texas that I've seen. The essay is well written and together with the photography makes for a classic.

Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes

Author: Sheryl Smith-Rodgers
Average review score:

A great read for travelers
Sometimes writers read a book and wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?" The idea is so good, the research looks like so much fun, and reading the finished product is just effortless. Just a few pages into Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes and we were getting those familiar thoughts--what a great idea! Texas author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers has come up with a real winner here that will appeal to readers whether you're living in Texas, planning a trip to the Lone Star State, or just traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Divided geographically, this guide takes a look at restaurants and cafes that been serving Texas for 20 years or longer. You'll find all types of restaurants here, from ones near major tourist areas like San Antonio's Casa Rio, located right on the beautiful River Walk, to small, out of the way places like Tomball's Goodson's Cafe and Waskom's New Waskom Cafe, which isn't new at all but dates back to 1928. Each of the restaurant entries includes a history of the cafe along with directions and nearby attractions. Many of the cafe listings also include recipes for Texas favorites ranging from chicken fried steak to pecan pie.

Great Book On Organic Gardening
Howard covers the essentials of Basic Organic Gardening as well as the how to's. I bought the book at Rohde's for about the same price before shipping. If you can't get to Garland; but it here. We just completed our 20'x20' raised bed garden. Our front yard is the lushest greenest yard in the neighborhood with NO CHEMICALS. We have been a fan of Howard for a few years now.
